Why do Some Societies Make Disastrous Decisions?

The reading for this week was “Why do some societies make disastrous Decisions?” written by Jared Diamond. His main claim in the paper is reasons why societies make bad decisions. He purposes three reasons, failure to anticipate the problem, failure to perceive the problem and failure in attempting to solve the problem. In the beginning and the end of the paper he specifically points out how this applies to societies with regards to environmental issues. I agree with his perspective on this issue and think he supported his claim well and in an easy to read way. Environmental issues are extremely over looked as far as the impact that they make on a society. When living in a big city where the grocery store provides all the food and there are few grassed areas it is easy to over. This is the case for the officials that deal with environmental issues in our government. He explains well how they seem to be blind sighted by an issue that is more than important. I really liked the part of the paper when he explained how beliefs and culture play a role in how one deals with the three reasons societies make bad decisions. It is always a hard choice wither to lose your values to save your life or save your life and lose your values. This is one of those questions that doesn’t have a right answer.

  1. I agree that the choosing values situation is very hard. I also thought that his topic of global warming was very relevant to his point. His paper is easy to read and I also could understand what he was trying to say.
