“Dream On”

Reading some of the other blogs as an example to see how I should write mine, I realized that there are some very good writers in this class. Being that I am not the sharpest pencil in the cup of pencils you keep on your desk, I hope to make up my lack of writing skills with creativity and wit. For my educational narrative I plan to write about how my childhood dream to become a pirate has matured after going through 12 years of public schooling and my first couple of weeks here at JMU. Ever since the first grade I was told that I could be anything that I wanted. 1st grade – 6th grade all I heard was, dream big, shoot for the moon, shoot for the stars, and that anything is possible. I absorbed everything they told me, and took it literally. I was going to be “Captain West” and I was going to be the baddest pirate on the seven seas. I started to grow up just a little in middle school and I found out that the seven seas were actually the five oceans, and that the word “baddest” is not actually a word. By the time high school had come, I realized my childhood dream had gone. I had more things to worry about, what college I wanted to go to, what I wanted to major in, and what job I wanted to have when I got out of college. It is one of my beliefs that nothing is impossible and that if I wanted to be a pirate, I would have been the most notorious and feared pirate on the water. Fortunately, public schooling has made some of my dreams a little more realistic and reachable. Here at JMU I have declared an ISAT major and want to become an environmental engineer. My next dream? Save the world. Stay dreamy my friends.

  1. My mind has been tickled with humor. Well done, sir. Don't worry about any lack of writing skills you may have because simplicity is key in writing, at least thats how i feel. I think the imagination and creativity that you're going to employ in this paper more than compensate for what you think you lack in writing. I actually want to read whatever final copy you come up with so here's to creativity.

  6. Your writing style is unique and creative! There's nothing wrong with that at all! I agree with Nick, there's nothing more fun to write about than your passion because personally I could go on for hours about what I like and I look forward to reading your finished product! I'm digging the catchy clincher at the end "Stay dreamy my friends," ...classy

  9. Doug, your topic is well received! Make sure you thoroughly develop your idea and talk about what in academics specifically changed your outlook on your career choice and maybe life in general. Also, pay attention to the community focus of the project assignment as well. If you incorporate these suggestions, you should have an effective narrative with your creative style and unique voice.
