Although it was required for the continuation of my high school education, I learned a lot through community service about the community. I never realized or imagined how poor people live and what they do to provide for their families. It was the summer going into my junior year when I volunteered at Food for Others. I volunteered there for about two months packaging boxes of food, for victims of poverty who came weekly with food stamps. I few up in a middle class family with some privileges for where I go for vacation. I knew that people where unemployed and hungry, but I didn't know it was as bad as it is. I suppose they never did well in school or had the opportunity to go to a good school like I was fortunate enough to experience. I have become more aware of how bad things are in my community and seen that poverty doesn't only exist in third world countries. Poverty occurs everywhere and I feel rewarded to have seen I that I helped them and made a difference in their lives. I t was one of the most influential activities I have ever been a part of, and I am happy to have gotten the chance to experience it.
I had a similar experience! I helped out with this organization called Our Neighbors Child and it helped gather toys for families that couldn't afford gifts for the holidays. It made me realize that we take a lot of things for granted. I think its awesome that you helped out and I think more people should do it!
ReplyDeleteJessie, this is an experience in which you were forced to venture outside of your normal community and learn more about a community you might not otherwise be exposed. You could write more about how your actual experiences with this community contradicted previous assumptions you may have held. You've started to do this with the example about poverty not being in third world countries.
