Disney and Status Blog Post

“Children’s Culture and Disney’s Animated Films” by Henry Giroux was in my opinion an over analysis of a light topic. Disney movies are meant to look pretty and entertain kids when their parents are tired. To say that children at such a young are picking up social concepts from them is unreasonable. Having grown up watching every single movie that Disney released; I can honestly say I never noticed that they suppress women to men. I currently don’t think that. In movies such as Pocahontas and Mulan that are very moderately based on actual events and expressed culture of the time; it is unfair to judge the male and female relationship. I can recognize how an adult might see that but children don’t understand the concepts of hierarchy at such a young age. That’s why I feel the author shouldn’t be so hard on Disney! Also, as far as the analysis of the article; I’ve heard this theory before and he does a poor job supporting it in my opinion.
The second article “Talking Up Close” by Deborah Tannen I found to be very interesting. I liked how she related the human hieratical system to that of monkeys. Many people believe humans evolved from monkeys so making a connection between the two supported her argument. One thing I didn’t like is how she sorted the hieratical system by gender. I can acknowledge that it plays a large role but I think she should have focused on background. Such as where a person if from and where they currently live.

  1. I agree with multiple of the points that you made towards the Giroux essay and I especially liked how you included the fact that the Disney movies Pocahontas and Mulan were actually based off of real events.

  3. I definitely see where you are coming from when you disagree with Henry Giroux's viewpoint on Disney. I also agree that he seems to be way too hard on the coorporation. Maybe he had a bad Disney experience as a child?
