Rhetorical Analysis- Gay Marriage

For my rhetorical analysis I will be writing about how Michael Lindenberger views the issue of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gender) marriage in America. I chose to write about this topic because achieving LGBT equality in America is something I am very interested in. It is also a very common and current issue in which everybody has a stance on. As he wrote in The Time Magazine article A Gay-Marriage Solution: End Marriage?, Lindeberger believes that a possible solution to having LGBT marriage equality in America is to stop calling it marriage, but instead a civil union.

One solution Lindenberger provides is to stop including the government in this one religious ceremony, marriage, because the government is not involved in many other religious ceremonies. Lindenberger proves his point by using examples of other religious ceremonies that do not include the government. These examples include bar mitzvahs and a similar Catholic ceremony with girls.

Lindenberger also acknowledges how straight couples or already married couples may feel about abandoning the word "marriage" for all Americans. By doing this Lindenberger makes the article appeal to not only the LGBT community, but also those who are straight or already married.
