In the “Children’s Culture and Disney’s Animated Films” by Henry Giroux I found myself agreeing to certain parts of his article while I argued others. One of the main points I agreed with was the fact that Disney as a company tries to have control over the consumer. They do this by producing must buy movies that try and shape a generation. I remember one of those movies while I was a kid was Lion King. Disney made it so appealing and memorable that people still refer to it today. One of the parts I do not agree with is that Disney tries to brain wash children. I understand that in order for them to make money they have to make movies that people will want to see again and again. As far as these movies brain washing children is a little. I agree with the fact that there certain racism and sexism, but it is so small that a young child would not be able to pick up on it.
I think the article “Talking up close,” is a great way to understand how two different genders interact. The author used the example that men and women in the same conversation can walk away with two completely different understandings. This shows how men and women not only perceive each other differently, but they communicate on different levels. Men tend to be more dominant, where women are more passive. For men it is always a competition, but for women they enjoy interacting and sharing meaningful thoughts.
I agree that there are probably hidden messages in Disney movies. I also think that you're correct about Disney doesn't try to brain wash children. They must realize that when it comes to kids movies, they're the first choice and have a good reputation. THe subliminal messaging is unavoidable at times if that's all we're exposed to as a society to begin with.
ReplyDeleteIs it necessarily bad that Disney is able to have such control on the children's market though? Growing up I've never had a bad experience with Disney whether it be movies, Disneyland, music, books, etc. I like the fact that almost everyone is able to share that experience with me through a centralized medium. It's not like its a wallstreet monopoly or like an oil tycoon. Its just a childrens entertainment empire that has succeeded, In a good way i believe, in promoting its messages.
ReplyDeletethere are definitely hidden messages left in Disney movies but in no way is Disney trying to brainwash kids. All of Disney's movies are meant for entertainment not for brainwash.
