For my rhetorical essay I plan on analyzing the strategies that Laura Blue and Jonathan Woodward used to prove their point in their Time Magazine article, Hope For Uganda’s Child Soldiers. They show evidence that the fighting in Uganda may be coming to an end and child soldiers will be getting the opportunity to be part of society again. They do this in several different ways.
One way is by using statistics. The statistics show that the fighting has gone down and the number of displaced child soldiers. They also talk about the current status of the area and news concerning the area. They even take information gathered from a press conference and add it to the article. All of the information they use supports the idea that the conflict is coming to an end. Secondly, the authors quote people from the area. They also quote experts in the area who share the same idea that the fighting is going to come to a halt.
The authors also have tactics that help to make the article more interesting and personal. The article starts off with a narrative a child soldier in Uganda. The story makes the reader feel bad for the children and draws them into the article. I believe that this is very clever strategy to get the reader interested in the topic that is being covered and care about the information in the article. This helps to build a suspenseful tone where the reader wants to read to the end of the article to find out what might happen to the child.
