Readings for 10/12/11-- Bodie

Much like the rest of my classmates, I tended to shy away from the opinion of the author with regards to the Disney article. We all grew up with Disney, and my views or opinions of the world haven’t been shaped differently because it. We were simply too young to pick up on whatever underlying messages that were being presented. And I believe that it is still true today. I remember those movies as great childhood memories, not attacks on female gender or racial slaps in the face. And I want to keep them as favorite childhood memories.

In the article “Talking up close,” just from personal experience I have to agree with the author. In communication class we learned a similar idea that women communicate to build relationships, and men communicate in a competitive manor. It’s the reason that girls can talk for three hours at a time to the same person. They are simply building up on that relationship. With me, we eventually run out of things to compete over and go our separate ways. The opening of her piece was especially amusing because its very easy to picture in ones head.

  1. I definitely can relate to your Disney paragraph. I don't recall noticing any themes that formed the way I view my or anyone else's role in today's world, and even if any "underlying messages" were there, I don't believe that they were purposefully put there as a message. I think analysts may be looking a little too far into Disney.

  2. I agree with what you said about Disney movies. I learned so many things from watching those movies and had a stellar collection. It's hard to believe that people overanalyze things so much that they try to give Disney movies a bad image. As a kid, i never thought that any race, or gender was being attacked. The stereotypical images are so subtle that I doubt any other elementary student could make anything of it, even if they were obvious.

  3. I agree with how you said childeren are simply too young to pick up on the underlying messages that Disney has. Also, I am in a communication class also and we too had a discussion on how men communicate more competitively and women communicate to build relationships.

  4. like everyone else, i agree about Disney. It shouldn't be so overanalyzed, and I don't think Disney is out to make children racist. and I definitely see what you mean about girls being able to talk for 3 hours verus guys. There are definitely differences.
