Reading Summaries

“Talking Up Close” by Deborah Tannen, discusses the dynamics of conversations between men and women and conversation in the workplace. The author believes that women are looking for a relationship in communication and men only look for status. The article also talks about the bad connotations that hierarchies have developed in places like the United States. However, the people that are a part of one do not see it as a bad thing and tend to look at the positive aspects that it offers. People in a hierarch society look at themselves as part of a group but people who are not tend to look at themselves as just an individual.

In the article “Children’s Culture and Disney’s Animated Films” the author, Henry A Giroux, questions the intentions of the Disney Corporation. The films are said to have wholesome messages to them about important values. However, a lot of the films can be seen as having some racist and sexist tendencies. The author believes that these films portray a fantasy land to young children, but because of these inclinations the kids may be getting the wrong idea. The author also believes that Disney knows that their movies have these problems, but over look them and try to look like a giving and caring corporation. I believe that the children who are young enough to be influenced by these films are not old enough to pick up on subtle queues that may or may not be hinting towards racism or sexism.

  1. It seems that everyone has the same general opinion that young kids can’t pick up on these topics. I think Disney knows they are making errors in the film, but then again the intended age of viewers gives them leeway I think.

  2. I definitely agree with you. I also wrote something along the lines of the children that are actually watching the Disney movies are not mature enough to have an influence put upon them.
