In "Talking Up Close: Status and Connection," by Tannen, she illustrates the differences in communication styles between males and females in the work place and how they interact. Tannen goes on to explain her ideas by using examples of conversations between genders and the type of verbal language used. She expresses how women are more likely to interrupt more so than men to show power of a stronger alliance or hierarchy, while men interrupt in competition for the purpose to dominate another. Another factor that proves differences in communication styles is culture. The respect and language that is held at certain standards in business of one country could be completely different in another. That goes to show that people of different backgrounds will not get the same information and message from the same conversation.
In "Children's Culture and Disney's Animated Films", by Giroux, he criticizes the way in which Disney films bring up "cultural and social messages." Some of the popular princess moves are not as innocent as they seem to come across, says Giroux. He believes that movies like Ariel promote rebellion and Aladdin is defined by rise in social standing. Also the pretense of Aladdin gives Arabs a bad name, and is racist to the ideals in which they live and treat people. Giroux also brought up the fact that there is often a lack of power from the parents filmed in these animated movies that would create discipline and ethic. In conclusion, children may be taking the wrong message from the intended entertainment movies, that in return shape the ideas kids think and act how they can be popular or get their way in life.
I think you brought up a good point from the "Talking Up Close" article, about being from different backgrounds. I think that mentioning that shows that not all differences between men and women are simply based on their genders, and that the environment around them might have just as much of an impact on their communication.
ReplyDeleteI think Jessie does a good job describing "Children’s Culture and Disney’s Animated Films"since she made sure to give specific examples from the text.
ReplyDeleteI think you brought up a good point too. I think it has a lot to do with the environment that people are in.
