Reading Summaries

I thought these readings were interesting but unnecessarily long. I had to add more paper to my printer twice while printing them out! Anyway, the first article, "Talking Up Close: Status and Connection" was cool because it was interesting to read the differences of communicating between men and women. I also liked how in-depth it explored the topic hierarchy. It really showed that hierarchy is not a bad thing because although your parents have power over you, they don't get the joys and carelessness of childhood. The article also discussed how there is no reason why you can't be friends with some people, who have power over you (a boss/teacher), which I was able to relate to because in the past, I have had really strong relationships with teachers, but there is obviously still that level of respect. I had issues with the next article, "Children's Culture and Disney's Animated Films" because I hate when people overanalyze things. The author made Disney seem like this horrible corporation that is tainting kids lives, but I really don't think that is what Disney has set out to do.

  1. I definitely agree with the length, but I agree with you when you stated that parents may seem as if they have the upper hand, but the children are still the ones that are enjoying the everyday joys of like with animations, theme parks, etc.

  2. I agree with you that the author overanalyzed the values that disney is trying to portray. I think that little things that could support poor values can be found in any movie if you analyze it enough.

  3. I also agree that they were to long! Many of the examples given in the Disney article drew the same conclusion yet they proceeded to make the point five to six times.

  4. I really like how you used the example of your own relationships with your teachers to support your feelings on the article!
