Summaries

In the article "Talking Up Close", by Tannen, the differences in communication between men and women was emphasized. This is an older point of view that I think is starting to lose its validity. I think the differences between men and women are definitely there, but that they are blown out of proportion because of generalizations and stereotypes. In reality, men and women really don't communicate that differently. We still use words and gestures, we still are able to relate to the same things. The biggest differences are solely between the generalizations of men and women, not the real life beings.

In the article "Children's Culture and Disney's Animated Films", written by Henry Giroux, the argument brought up was intriguing. The main point of the article was that Disney films have a very different purpose than what the general public believes, and that is to subtly take over the minds of Disney's children viewers turning them into a powerful consumer population. While this is may have some truth to it, I think that this perspective is a bit extreme. Disney is a business, and so it needs its customers, but I refuse to believe that that is Disney's sole purpose. Of course the company needs revenue otherwise it would not exist; however, it is hard to deny the creativity, joyfulness, and adventure that is injected into each and every film.

  1. I think the author also blows the differences between men and women out of proportion. There are differences but it is not as dramatic as portrayed.

  2. I agree. I think men and woman are different but can act similar. I think it really depends on your background and expericences.
