In the essay “Children’s Culture and Disney’s Animated Films”, Giroux, the author, goes on about how Disney animated films are not what they were originally intended to be. Initially, the purpose of Disney films were to create entertainment for young children and help encourage and influence their widening imagination. Giroux on the other hand believes that children and adapting the wrong ideas from the films. The author makes points that state the fact that there are racism and sexism points throughout the films but in my opinion, the viewers of most disney movies are too young to pick up on the interpretations or do not care enough to want to judge a disney movie.
In the second article “Talking Up Close: Status and Connection”, the author Tannen discusses the points that dominance is based off part of alliances, but also the point that alliances cannot exist without competition. With the multiple references and examples throughout the piece of writing, I enjoyed the essay because it made unique connections to other works and everyday thoughts. The example referencing towards the monkeys can also relate to us given that the monkeys do things that make some superior to others. This establishment of an hierarchy is present even though we as humans do not like to admit to it due to our democratic belief of “all men created equal”.
I agree that Disney was meant for the purpose of entertainment, although some kids believe in the same values brought up in the films exist in reality. Also I agree with the statement that in order to have an alliance, there normally needs to be a threat of friendship or power that creates competition.
